Mating leaf-rollers - Camptonotus carolinensis - male

Mating leaf-rollers - Camptonotus carolinensis - Male
Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, USA
August 13, 2013
Here is a ventral view of the male of the pair, a few days later, highlighting the clubbed structures extending from the coxae of the second pair of legs. Females don't have these structures, and I haven't been able to find any information about them. I assume these are important in detecting substrate vibrations during courtship, since this species is carnivorous and probably liable to cannibalism.
