I was thinking something in this neighborhood...



...but they're about twice as big as your specimen, if your estimate correct.

you are probably correct about the size. I was going by the size of the florets of the Serenoa repens. In the lower left of the third image is a syrphidae, Ornidia obesa if that helps.
