Thanks. Chrysopilus thoracicus was common here a couple of weeks ago, and the similarity is obvious enough, I should have guessed (if it weren't for my fear of fly id's). - Roger

Chrysopilus species
Nice photo--I love the flattened "U" shape the happy couple makes. I had a similar one in my yard on 6/10, but did not get a photo. Could be Chrysopilus fasciatus (no photos here, but common in NCSU collection), or maybe Chrysopilus ornatus, of which there are photos here, and also pretty common in NCSU collection--see comments to my image above.

Fear of fly ID's is well-justified--almost all of my biggest goofs have been of flies! I now approach them with healthy trepidation.
