The stuff of nightmares - Tigrosa aspersa - female

The stuff of nightmares - Tigrosa aspersa - Female
Patapsco River, Baltimore County, Maryland, USA
June 2, 2007
Size: 35-40 mm, not incl. legs
This very large and interesting-looking spider was sunning itself on a rock at water's edge of a medium-sized river. Any idea what it is? And is that stuff on its back part of its body or is it carrying something?

Moved
Moved from Hogna.

It
is a Hogna, and the stuff on it's back is spiderlings.
Looks like aspersa, but the size seems a bit large.

Apparently
When it comes to the big spiders, we all add about 10mm in our eyeball estimates. They look gargantuan.
