Large blue-winged fly - Mydas clavatus

Large blue-winged fly - Mydas clavatus
Oak Ridge, Anderson County, Tennessee, USA
June 12, 2007
Size: 1-1/2"
One of the girls at my science camp spotted this large "gunmetal blue-winged" fly on the ground. There was both a male and female close by. The flies appeared to have a lapping-type mouthpart like a house fly, not a biting type like a horse fly. The male had a little tuft at the end of his abdomen. Can anyone identify this insect?
