Squash Vine Borer - Melittia cucurbitae

Squash Vine Borer - Melittia cucurbitae
Fort Bragg, Cumberland County, North Carolina, USA
June 19, 2004
I Id'd this one by looking at the pics in The Moth Book by WJ Holland. Copyright is 1968, so I guess the name could have changed since then.

Also called M. cucurbitae, Holland
Covell (1) uses the name M. cucurbitae, apparently a synonym.

What you've got there is the Dover reprint of Holland's The Moth Book, (2) originally published in 1903. It is still a useful reference, but it is hard to keep track of the name changes. Covell, Field Guide to Eastern Moths is out-of-print and hard to find used.

Covell's Field Guide to Moths
As I was looking for more information on the Squash Vine Borer, I noticed your comment that Covell's Field Guide is out-of-print and hard to find used. If you don't know by now, actually it has been reprinted and is available on Amazon, under the title "A Field Guide to Moths of Eastern North America." Virginia Museum of Natural History is the publisher.
