Male mosquito resting on moss. Measured 4.8 mm from the front of the head to the rear of the abdomen.

The other photo shows some unusual traits from the front of the skeeter.

My guess would be another male Culex territans, although I might just be imagining the apical bands on the abdominal tergites.

Actually, I think that is what this bugger is. I did some alteration in an image editor, and I think that is your beast.

Sean, thanks very much, it is good to get an ID. I should have tried for a lateral shot too.

Do you have any idea what is going on with what seems to be a very "furry" tip on the mouthparts? Two tubes of the probocis, right, and what are all those filaments at the end of it? This is better visible in the other image.

 
Palps
In many male mosquitoes the maxillary palps have the 3rd 4th and fifth segments bearing long setae. Perhaps some additional sensillae? I am not sure.
