Thank you for the ID, he certainly does match the comparison pictures that you linked to.

I had never seen one of these before last night's encounter, I will have to read up on them. I don't think they are common in this area, not in the city anyway. He sure is a fearsome looking fellow though, he actually hissed at me when I moved the leaf while photographing him... startled the heck out of me. He is so big!

I hope his girlfriend didn't leave eggs all over the garden, I would prefer not to run into another one.

 
They're quite harmless.
They don't bite. If you held it in your hand, it might continue to hiss threateningly but it's all bluff. The worst it could do is make some fine scratches on your skin with its claws trying to get away.
