Salt Marsh Moth (Estigmene acrea) - Estigmene acrea
Buxton, Traill County, North Dakota, USA

This specimen may be an example of Salt Marsh Moth (Estigmene acrea) 8131 hatching ova found on Common Milkweed. I reared the larva.
Here are a couple of examples of what the adult looks like

Sharon, Did your larva pupate and if so do you have a picture of the pupa? I am trying to rear a caterpillar I found on Pigweed. It has gotten still, but does not look like it is pupating.

Cat on pig weed
2015 batch I reared only on milkweed. I had released a good number of the larva in 4 and 5 instar. Out of the 2 couple dozen I keep only one pupated. I think the milkweed killed them. I read they do better a mixed diet in later instars. I had the opportunity to rear again this yr. I reared on a mixed salad which included plantain, pig weed, bean leaves, Apple, clover, etc. I released again 4 and 5 instars. Kept a dozen and yes the all pupated. I did have one that eclosed and remaining are in the fridge for the winter. I am not at home today and will try to send a pic tomorrow.

Thanks,
Sharon

Thank you Sharon. Interesting information. I kept looking and found a pupa on BG. I am sure mine died because they mentioned how quickly it pupated. Probably the lack of variety killed it. I only knew to offer Pigweed. I am rather certain I have seen a group of eggs like that on my sheet. The Salt Marsh Moth is quite common here.

Thanks and hope you get a sec
Thanks and hope you get a second chance at rearing such beautiful cats with success like I did.

Sharon
