some kind of clearwing moth on a hackberry leaf - Vitacea admiranda

some kind of clearwing moth on a hackberry leaf - Vitacea admiranda
Austin, Texas, USA, Travis County, Texas, USA
June 16, 2007
Size: 1 cm
Size is an estimate from memory. I think this may be a Doll's clearwing moth, Paranthrene dollii, but the thickness of the yellow abdominal stripes does not match photographs of P. dollii specimens I can find.

Moved
Moved from Clearwing Moths.

identification of moth
This moth is likely Vitacea admiranda (Hy.Edw.). Images (Figure A.) found in an article called"Abundant Occurrence of the "rare" Vitacea admiranda (Hy.Edw.)(Sesiidae) in the coastal Bend of Texas" by Charles W. Bordelon Jr. and Edward C. Knudson, Spring 1998 (Volume 40, Number 1) of the Lepidopterist's News, correspond nicely with this photo. Some specimens have a dark forewing just like P. dollii with abdominal sedments 5-7 completely dark. The authors indicate that this species is variable in color and size. The dates of flight and image date are right on for southern TX. This moth is commonly found near stands of Mustang Grape (Vitis candicans).

Moved
Moved from Tinthiinae. Wasn't getting much action on the subfamily page so we thought we would move it here to be seen.
