I was following this fly around, thinking it was some kind of red Wasp, and when it landed I saw that it was very similar to one I had photographed in my yard the other day. .

not a syrphid
there's no spurious vein. I think this is more likely a Xylophagid.

 
What about Soldier Fly
The Xylophagid photos show prominent antennae, and my images don't show very visible ones. (Of course soldier flies also have prominent antennae)...When these fly, they look like red wasps. They slowly fly through grass and weeds, like a hunting wasp.

 
not a stratiomyid
Soldier flies have a nearly circular d cell, however this fly's d cell is elongate. I'm not sure about xylophagidae, it might also be a therevid.
