Size: approx 1/4 -3/8"
Found this today on a milkweed plant while looking for Monarchs. It Would wriggle itself horizontally down the stem instead down headfirst like other caterpillers I've seen.

Syrphis flly larva
and looks like something in the genus Allograpta (below). Likely preying on aphids, which I know are common on my milkweed, at least, : )
