That's weird! Are you able to obtain a specimen? This could be a new species.

 
I didn't get one at the time
And I'm back at college now, but they were fairly common in the area, and I'll ask my brother to see if he can go back out there and find some for you.

If you are able to collect a series of them I should be able to describe the species, which I would be happy to name after you! There are lots of red mites running around... to ensure you collect the right ones, make sure they have two pairs of eyes like the ones in your photo. That signifies the subfamily Erythraeinae... but the mite in your photo does not look like other erythraeines in your area. Anyway, best of luck!
