Conehead Katydid? - Capnobotes fuliginosus

Conehead Katydid? - Capnobotes fuliginosus
Silver City, Grant County, New Mexico, USA
June 17, 2007
Size: 2.5" inc. wings
This pretty individual likes to cling head-down to a grass stem with its wings and legs all folded up. I couldn't get it to fly or hop...maybe newly molted?

I'm really glad you got her (I think I see an ovipisitor) to get her to spread her wings! They'll spread them as a defensive display. Makes a species ID possible. Capnobotes fuliginosus is the only species with smoky black wings like that.
