Bee or Fly? - Merodon equestris

Bee or Fly? - Merodon equestris
Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, USA
June 1, 2007
A very curious bee or fly. It reminds me of a Narcissus Bulb fly, except for the vary dark abdomen area, but I seem to recall it flew like a bee would.

Syrphid fly
Eristalinae

Antenna and face say "fly"
I'm pretty sure it's a syrphid and the Narcissus Bulb Fly is in that category, but am not sure this is one. Syrphids are also called hover or flower flies, reflecting their habits and bee-like quality.
