fuzzy white caterpillar (with a few long black hairs) - Acronicta americana
Downers Grove, DuPage County, Illinois, USA
June 17, 2007
Size: about 1 & 1/2 inches long
I found this guy in my backyard in the late afternoon the other day...he was crawling across the dirt in a pot I was getting ready to plant flowers in. I've never seen a caterpillar like this one before. Does anyone know what kind he is?

Cottonwood Dagger
I would say this is a Cottonwood Dagger Moth Caterpillar - Hodges#9205 (Acronicta lepusculina). See http://bugguide.net/node/view/108074.

Thanks!
Thanks for the ID, glad to know what kind he is!
