primarily in tropical areas of the Neotropical, Oriental, and Afrotropical Regions (>95% of the world fauna) with a few elements ranging into Holarctic; in our area, most of the US & adjacent Canada: 4 spp. widespread across e. & so. US (two of them range into Canada), the rest have more or less restricted ranges in the extreme so./sw. US(1)
