Soldier Beetle - Podabrus planulus

Soldier Beetle - Podabrus planulus
Jefferson Notch area, Coos County, New Hampshire, USA
May 27, 2007
Size: about 10 mm
I must have thought I'd taken some better shots during my session with this newly eclosed Podabrus but this is the only whole-body shot I have. I must say, since I had forgotten collecting this beetle as a cantharid larva and only had the pupa to go on, I was not expecting to see a cantharid adult in the pupa cubicle :-)

Moved very tentatively
i suspect the indicated 5 mm size to be underestimated

You're right as usual..
By coincidence I found another today trapped inside a screen porch in Center Sandwich, Carrol County NH and it was probably closer to 10mm. Didn't photograph it, just released it out a small tear in the screen. I gave it a good look with my pocket loupe however while it tried to bite my thumb as I held it.

Also It appears I shot this one as a pupa on alternate sides of my rule, which has half-millimeters on one side and full millimeters on the other. That explains my error. The shot where it is best laid out along the rule is not the half-millimeter side but the full millimeter side. I've changed the estimated length accordingly.
