Death Valley Gryllus - Gryllus - male

Death Valley Gryllus - Gryllus - Male
Mosaic Canyon, Death Valley National Park, Inyo County, California, USA
March 13, 2016
This cricket was found under rocks on a "landslide" in a very shaded area of the canyon. The overall dark appearance with reddish hind tibial bases resembles G. vocalis though I don't know if it occurs here.

However this male has a very narrow head in comparison, and it has very long hindwings. Perhaps just a macropterous variation, but interesting nonetheless. The song is very rattled and broken up, perhaps because it was calling under rock? Or maybe it was too cold for it in the thick shade.

Note that the cricket is covered in sand and dirt, some from its habitat, some from trying to escape me!

Dave Weissman:
"Interesting site but fits with "G. mohave" and certainly looks like him."
