Prionus (Mallodon dasystomus) - Mallodon dasystomus - male

Prionus (Mallodon dasystomus) - Mallodon dasystomus - Male
Juno Beach, Palm Beach County, Florida, USA
June 19, 2007
Size: 45 mm
This very large beetle (45 mm) was just inside my entry gate at 9:00AM. I am one block inland from the Ocean. There has been some construction work going on in my house this past two weeks and the landscaper sprayed the front of the house & bushes for ants two days ago. Perhaps that is what drove this bug out into the building. It had attempted to climb up the wall, but fell back. I photographed the bug and directed it towards some bushes & shade. it opened its wing covers a bit while progressing. Seemed to be moving a bit slowly. . .maybe the ant spray?

Moved
Moved from Prioninae.

Mallodon dasystomus...
...distinguished from Archodontes melanopus by the forward-directed mandibles (versus downward) and the arcuately parallel-sided pronotum with more distinct surface sculpturing laterally.

Malladon dasystomus
Thank you for the ID. What an exciting world we live in! Can someone please move this insect to its proper place in the guide? Thanks!

No.
Right subfamily, wrong genus. This is either Archodontes or Mallodon. I always get those two confused, so best to let Ted MacRae have a word on it.
