New England insect - Alaus oculatus

New England insect - Alaus oculatus
Lee, Strafford County, New Hampshire, USA
June 19, 2007
Size: 1.375 inches
This bug was found in my basement (with garage access, so may have come in from outside). It is a bit lighter than it appears here, more of a dark gray with lighter specks. Eyes and antennae are at the very front of the head, with antennae often folded back. No obvious wings or division for wings. Does not appear to have wall-climbing abilities.

The flying wings are protected under
the hard outer covering on the back called elytra. This is the Eyed Click Beetle - Alaus oculatus, images in the guide here
