Twice-stabbed Ladybird Beetle? - Calvia quatuordecimguttata

Twice-stabbed Ladybird Beetle? - Calvia quatuordecimguttata
Amherst, Massachusetts, USA
June 1, 2004
At first glance I thought this was C. stigma, but the red elytra markings seem unusually large. Does anyone know if there are regional differences? It does look similar to this image from Texas A&M University....

Moved
Can be moved, now that we have another one confirmed by Eric.

Moved from Ladybird Beetles.

suggest Calvia quatuordecimguttata
May I suggest this is actually a color form of Calvia quatuordecimguttata? I agree with Lynette that this lady really doesn't look like C. stigma. The dots don't look right - wrong shape, too close to suture, color looks pink vice red/orange. And C. stigma typically looks circular from the top, including shoulders that follow the circle (see the following where the shadow helps to see this shape)

Conversely, this individual seems to match a Calvia quatuordecimguttata line drawing (one of 10!) from Gordon (1), and Eric's description of possible color forms under

A web image search came up empty for examples of this color form, so yours would be the first :)

How big?
Was it the size of a twice-stabbed? Hyperaspis tend to be quite small, but certainly a possibility here.

Hmmmm...
I honestly don't recall...but judging from the size of the cells on the leaf in the photo, I would say perhaps 5mm or so...

Not twice-stabbed
I am by no means even close to a beetle expert, but this looks more like a Hyperaspis species. According to my Peterson Beetle guide, I would guess Hyperaspis signata which occurs NY to FL.
