Mydas Fly - Mydas clavatus

Mydas Fly - Mydas clavatus
Norris City, White County, Illinois, USA
June 21, 2007
Size: Approx. 1 3/4 in. long
This thing was larger than the normal wasps I see around here, but it resembled one somewhat. I also noticed that it had a light-colored patch toward the middle of it's body. Is there enough of this specimen showing to get an ID from? If not, I'll just get rid of it.

Thanks!
Thanks for the quick, informative identification! I appreciate it.

Mydas clavatus
This isn't a wasp (although it's a good mimic of one!). It's a Mydas fly. These are really impressive insects, in my opinion!

funny.... we were writing at the same time
while I was typing another ID came in at the same time... apparently we're both in agreement!

I noticed that too, doubly co
I noticed that too, doubly confirmed! Hah

Not a wasp
It's a fly in the genus Mydas, probably M. clavatus.

They can be pretty intimidating for flies!
