What kind of beetle is this? - Calosoma calidum
Miles City, Custer County, Montana, USA
June 21, 2007
Size: 1 1/4"
I found this beetle in a sand pile, in the evening. It has sharp overlapping mandibles.

A suggestion...
Perhaps a species of Calosoma? :)

Species
I think you are right. I believe it is a Calsoma Calidum-Fiery Hunter

Ground Beetle,
and a very attractive one at that. I'll be interested in the species name as well.
