Tipula Crane Fly on Leaf - Tipula - male

Tipula Crane Fly on Leaf - Tipula - Male
Near Ruraldale, Upshur County, West Virginia, USA
June 7, 2007
Is this Tipula colei or something similar? Looks like a Tipula colei I photographed last year and that was identified by Chen Young. That one was a female, though.

This male could
be in the Tipula colei group, but there are at least 6 species in the Tipula colei group in West Virginia, so I won't be able to nail down to species level without a close look of the genitalia. I notice you have a nice close shot of the head of this crane fly, a similar shot of the tail end would have increased greatly in identifying the species since the difference between species is heavily based on the genitalia. - Chen

Will post
Chen, I'll post the best crop I can of the tip of the abdomen, realizing this may well not be enough detail in a group with so many similar species. Thanks for your help with this one!
