Aphid for ID - Neotoxoptera
Temple Hills, Prince George's County, Maryland, USA
April 22, 2012
Sorry, I did not make note of the plant it was on.

Moved
Moved from Aphids.

Thanks, Natalie
I see this is the first BugGuide record for this genus. Cool.

Thanks for your help and expertise.

It is cool!
I've never seen this genus before, I'll have to look into it more and see if species can be determined from an image.

Great, thanks
I appreciate that. It does look like the one they've labelled Neotoxoptera formosana, but without photos of the other species for comparison I'm completely lost. I've looked around but can't find any. It also sounds like the differences may be very subtle...too much so for species based on image alone.

Haha that's the norm with aphids!
I have worked with a few experienced aphidologists as I became an aphidologist myself, and I can't decide if it makes me feel better or worse that they are still often stumped by specimens, even well prepared slide mounted specimens sometimes. There are about a billion keys and they often each use ridiculous characters. Some will be like "the sixth hair on antennal segment III is .003-.005mm vs .006-.009mm" 😒 It's fun. Plus some aphid keys are hundreds of pages long and then have zero drawings pictures! Why?!

Neotoxoptera I believe
