copper green bettle - Calosoma scrutator

copper green bettle - Calosoma scrutator
San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas, USA
April 19, 2016
Size: >3 cm
This beetle was also found outside Walgreens this evening and in most respects, looks just like the black beetle I found http://bugguide.net/node/view/1212799 and is also a bit smelly. However, it is larger and while the other beetle is solid black, this one has coppery green wings lined with copper, with copper also about it's head and thorax as you can see. It is really quite regal looking -- until it tries unsuccessfully to climb the plastic walls of its container and falls, legs sprawled in the air, its abdomen reflecting light like a dark prism.

looks like it
Yep, that looks like it alright! Wow, for some reason I really did not expect this beetle to be predatory in nature. I wonder whether it would eat a mealworm? Time for an experiment!

Is the black beetle that I linked to in my comments at all related? They really do look and smell similar to me.

Yes
The black beetle is also a Calosoma species, interesting that they smell similar.
