Male. This is the only North American species in the Family Meropeidae. It was attracted to an outdoor porch light. Identification was done by myself using "A Study of Insects" 4th ed 1976 p.449 by Borror, Delong, and Triplehorn. An old University text. The size and shape of the male claspers seems to be unique in the insects of this area so while I know very little about Scorpionflies I am confident of this ID. The book gives its range as Eastern N.Am from Ontario to Georgia and suggests it is rarely collected. I had one other layman report in the area this year of an "Earwig with wings". Neither he nor I had seen them before, so perhaps these were more numerous in 2004 than normal.
