The stringy frass is characteristic of Eriocraniidae. In
J. viridula
it is more in irregular lumps.

Probably not
There doesn't seem to be a linear portion. It may be another eriocraniid (most likely
Dyseriocrania griseocapitella
); the frass looks wrong for
Japanagromyza viridula
, but sometimes I have a hard time judging that from photos.

What should the frass look li
What should the frass look like for either miner? I have the leaf--I can look at it again to see. The frass seemed to form linear strips that were in pieces, and clustered in one portion of the mine.
