Formicidae - Formica dakotensis

Formicidae - Formica dakotensis
Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Quebec, Canada

This is a particularly interesting image. F. dakotensis often co-habits with other Formica species. The relationship is labeled inquilinism, but after the initial invasion by the F. dakotensis queen in the host nest, it looks more like a sort of friendly commensalism. It seems production of sexual castes of the host species is inhibited, though, so this must be called parasitism. The host species, visiting the same batch of membracids, is F. neogagates.
