When I took the photos...didn't even know they were gnats...awfully big for what I think of gnats. This one doesn't seem to have any orange....does that make it different from the others?

 
Different, yes
In most cases when you have species with reddish, yellowish or orange abdomen but otherwise blackish body, you will see the are females (telescopic tip of abdomen). The males often are completely black. This specimen, however, appears to be female as well, so that should definitely make it another species then in the other images.
