Unusual tabanid

I've struggled with this. I don't know what it is but my guess, based mainly on elimination of other species, is a male Stonemyia isabellina, a rare species that I have yet to see a photograph or specimen. I'll ask Dr. John Burger to have a look.

We're anxious to hear what Dr. Burger might have to say about the fly. This fly was photographed on a Loess Hills prairie in southwest Iowa.

Heard from Dr. Burger:

"Tony:
A male of Stonemyia. Can't tell from the angle of the shot which species. Probably tranquilla or isabellina.
JBurger"

I (TT) compared your image with specimens of male tranquilla in my collection, looks different enough for me to go with isabellina

What kind of angle shot would be useful for ID? We have a few more images, a rear view and a top view. I will send them if you think they would be useful.

Post as many

photos as you have. Once ID'd you can delete all the 'excess' photos and just leave 1 or a couple of photos that prove useful for ID purposes.

definitely isabellina, male

Compare your images with the other 2 eastern species in the genus, both have images in the Guide.
