Pupation Preparation - Citheronia regalis

Pupation Preparation - Citheronia regalis
Lakeeland, Polk County, Florida, USA
June 26, 2007
Size: 5 cm
This photo shows the caterpillar after about 48 hours of inactivity as it begins to pupate. Dramatic shrinkage has occured. At this stage the caterpillar should not be bothered. My experience has shown them to like to burrow under loose soil or bark even paper towels. They seem to like it dark. They may pupate at the surface is did this one.
