Red Beetle - Prionus

Red Beetle - Prionus
Pensacola, FL, Florida, USA
July 2, 2007
Size: Around an inch

I count about 17 little segments in the antennae (the segments were very fine without space in between as most Prionus photos I've found...more like this...http://bugguide.net/node/view/28040/bgimage), does that help you? Also, educate me a little...how does one tell the sex of such an insect?

Finally, is this a more rare/unusual insect to have seen? Or are they usually just "out of sight, out of mind..."
