Eastern Pinebarrens Tiger Beetle - Cicindela abdominalis

Eastern Pinebarrens Tiger Beetle - Cicindela abdominalis
Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve, Moore County, North Carolina, USA
July 1, 2007
Size: 8 mm
These small, dark tiger beetles were easy to overlook on the sandy trails at Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve. Size estimated. To me, they were strikingly smaller than most other tiger beetles with which I am familiar, such as Cicindela sexguttata. I thought these things were flies at first, buzzing around on the sand.

A first for the state of North Carolina on BugGuide.
