The local habitat consisted mainly of meadows with knee-high grass containing wet patches densely overgrown with tall reeds. There were plenty of poplars (both Populus deltoides & the less common P. tremuloides) as well as a few shrubby willows (Salix spp.) growing on the edge between this open habitat and the surrounding forest.
