Mystery fly/beetle: Chippewa Prairie Preserve, western Minnesota - Pterodontia flavipes

These little flies (?) were flying around in abundance. Very confusing appearance ... they looked like little lady beetles without elytra. I wish I had better/more photos, but they were moving so quickly that this is the best shot I got. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Did you get more images that you could add? Please crop your images to a rectangle that is essentially 'just the bug'. While you, as the contributor, can click on this image and see the full size 1300 pixel image you posted, the rest of us are restricted to this 560 pixel reduction which is only about 5% fly. You can click on Edit and replace this image with the cropped one. Thanks

Thank you for your feedback! I thought I had cropped the photo, but apparently not. I've re-submitted a new photo, although I don't know if it will actually help with the ID - it's pretty fuzzy. I appreciate your suggestions so far. Let me know if you have any new ideas!
