lots of these guys crawling on the ground and up plants.

Junonia
Odds are extremely high that it is Junonia coenia - Common Buckeye. However, Howard County is getting into the area where Junonia evarete nigrosuffusa can be seen as well.

We would guess a Buckeye, Junonia,
or something closely related to it. Could you tell what they were eating?

Unfortunately no... Always meaning to at least learn plant families but haven't gotten around to it yet. Also accidentally deleted the host plant photo!
