Maricopa Harvester ant - Pogonomyrmex maricopa

Maricopa Harvester ant - Pogonomyrmex maricopa
E of El Paso, El Paso County, Texas, USA
August 14, 2004
Size: 6 ft by 24 ft
This is a gigantic Pogonomyrmex maricopa nest (Maricopa harvester ant). The ants are about 1cm long and apparently have the worst sting of all Pogos, which is saying a lot. They clear out vegetation from all around the nests. You can see the nests from I-10 among the creosote bushes in loose sand east of the city.

Moved
Moved from Harvester Ants.

Here is one of the ants from these mounds

in case anyone is able to confirm the ID.

Looks
like El Paso to me - oops! I mean the area around El Paso.

Yikes
And I thought our ant piles were bad in NC!
