Long-winged grasshopper near stream - Melanoplus bivittatus - Male
Lena Park, Starke County, Indiana, USA
July 16, 2016
Size: medium
In marsh/prairie vegetation near the banks of Bogus Run in the Kankakee sand region. To me, it appears to be a Melanoplus, similar to M.foedus, or M. packardii -- but those are more tawny (this one's quite green) and those also seem to range more to the west.

male Melanoplus bivittatus

thanks!
Thank you Brandon. Sometimes it's all about perception -- I was thinking this had three dark stripes against a light green background. If I had considered that it could also be viewed as two light green stripes against a dark background I might I have figured it out.
