when we saw this, and yours was clearly the shortest, though
came pretty close.

 
This specimen also keys out t
This specimen also keys out to C. semota. The area in the key that separates out scripta describes the intermediate spot of the median group of three being either six to seven times as long as wide (scripta and laurentia) or very rarely more than five times as long as wide (texana, lineopunctata, confluens, and semota). The lack of bluish cast to the spots would exclude confluens, the other species it might be confused with.

Chrysomela scripta - Cottonwood Leaf Beetle in the guide here, but we don't have any images from anywhere near Montana yet??
