Fly - Cephalochrysa nigricornis - female

Fly - Cephalochrysa nigricornis - Female
Chicago Area County, Illinois, USA
July 10, 2007
This bright green fly resembled a flower fly. You can't see from this image but under the wings were evenly spaced black and yellow stripes. It reminded me of a hover fly but with out any yellow on the thorax.

Whoever moved this image for me I appricate it. I'm just curious though as how you found it? Was it the wing pattern that gave it up? Or just the green color?
Also how do you seperate this one from Chloromyia formosa?

I moved it, sorry I am a bit
I moved it, sorry I am a bit busy so I do not write a comment every time. The genus looks very much like some Sargus or a big Microchrysa. In contrast to Chloromyia, it looks much finer - yep that is how I would phrase it, Chloromyia is more hairy (it is the only Sarginae which has a lot of hairs on the eyes), the wings are darker and it looks more bulky. A good indication for Cephalochrysa is the white stripe in front of the face, in other species it is absent or smaller...Also the distance and the shape of the ocellar triangle towards the end of the head is an important character..
cheers
