Modest Sphinx Moth - Pachysphinx modesta

Modest Sphinx Moth - Pachysphinx modesta

July 11, 2007
Size: ~ 100 mm
Found early in the morning. It stayed in the sun for a while and then flew around until it found a shady place.

Moved from Pachysphinx.

Agreed
Your ID is correct. This is indeed almost certainly Pachysphinx modesta. According to the CBIF list occidentalis does not occur in British Columbia. In fact, according to Bill Oehlke's Sphingidae of Alberta site and confirmed by the website of the Alberta Entomology Collection, modesta is the only one of the two in either BC or Alberta. So I believe we can say with a degree of confidence that yours ID is correct.

Great image by the way!
