Large black beetle - Mydas clavatus
Potomac River, Frederick County, Maryland, USA

Size: About 1 1/4 inch
A very large black flying beetle or bug with a red spot underneath. Not the best photo, but the only one I could get before it flew away.

Looks more like a fly to us -

Bingo.
The Balabans are right on the money. This is a specimen of Mydas clavatus.
