Butterflies - Limenitis arthemis

Butterflies - Limenitis arthemis
Hamilton, Ontario, Canada
July 27, 2016
Size: Approx. 1.5 in
Probing the edge of a Hibiscus leaf. Looking for extra-floral nectaries?

How does one tell the full Red-Spotted
from the intergrades with the White Admiral? We seem to see hints of a white band here.

Intergrades
Honestly, without a dorsal shot to confirm, they can range anywhere from one to another, and unless it is an obvious white stripe, but still retaining the other characteristics of the purple, I don't think it matters.

Subspecies seem rather arbitrary at times when they are not spatially or temporally separated.

Others may have different opinions, feel free to move to intergrade if that is a better home.
