Velvet Ant - Dasymutilla - female

Velvet Ant - Dasymutilla - Female
Johns Island, Charleston County, South Carolina, USA
July 8, 2007

maybe D. mutata?
This is an absolutely beautiful photo! Probably D. mutata, but eastern many species look identical to this one.

Thank you
Kevin, thanks for the comments. I try hard to capture quality images, but it can be tough to do sometimes since I'm still using a basic kit lens.

Dasymutilla sp.
It's in the genus Dasymutilla, I'm unsure of the species.

Edit: Moving this to the genus page. Species ID can be difficult, it will have more luck there.

Great, thank you.
I appreciate your help.

Not an ant...
but a Velvet Ant (Mutillidae), this is a wingless individual, so is female. It reminds me of some of the smaller Dasymutilla species but I'm not that great at Mutillids at the genus level. Kevin Williams or Will Ericson might get you a species or at least a genus ID.
