Midas Fly - Nemomydas venosus - Female

Margarethe, I made an error in the earlier move...see my comment here under Robyn's pinned post.

If my ID is correct this time, your find here is of special interest because it's the first BG post of a *female* of the "dark phase" of N. venosus. (Actually, it's of special interest one way or the other! :-)

The "light phase" female of N. venosus is strikingly different looking from this (e.g. more colorful!):

Kondratieff & Welch warned that the "light phase" can be easily confused with N. brachyrhynchus:

whereas they say the "dark phase" of N. venosus will not be.

A neat mydid, one way or the other!

PS: Something struck me as strange: To my eye, the open "1st posterior cell" (= "r5" here) is more pronounced in your image here than in the very clear image of Robyn's nicely prepared pinned specimen below:

That seems odd to me because, if I'm understanding both of your comments correctly, both posts show the same individual.

BTW, the character '1st posterior cell (= r5) open at costal wing margin' is part of the diagnosis given for N. venosus in Hardy(1950)...at least males. Note that cell r5 is closed by vein R1 in the MND wing diagram for N. pantherinus.

Hi Mararethe :-)
This is (currently) a "seldom-posted" mydid genus on BugGuide...Opomydas. Nice find!! (Wish I could have been with you guys and seen it too...you know I'm a major mydidophile :-)

See comments under Robyn's post for more ID details:

You were missed on both trips
there was a lot you would have enjoyed
