Brachinus - Brachinus fulminatus - female

Brachinus - Brachinus fulminatus - Female
Block Island, Washington County, Rhode Island, USA
August 11, 2016
Muddy shore of Worden Pond at night

Moved
Moved from Bombardier Beetle. Thanks. I hadn't suspected a new species for my list on this one. I wonder if there are any more bombardier species on the island…

Likely two more species of Brachinus
among your specimens that have no assigned BugGuide numbers. More on this later.

Two more Brachinus on Block Island:
Brachinus janthinipennis Dejean (2 exx, Sachen Pond, 7/3/16); B. vulcanoides Erwin (1 ex, Worden Pond, 8/11/16); both spp. w/o BG numbers.

Thanks
The Sachem Pond specimens were collected the same night as another B. janthinipennis I photographed.(1) I found that species at the same location in 2015 as well.(2) As for B. vulcanoides, that's a new one for me. I wish I'd gotten a picture of it!

Brachinus fulminatus Erwin
-- this female specimen is distinguished near end of key by legs pale, protibia strigose, antennomere 3 entirely dark, ABL 8 mm. Thanks Aaron for this voucher.
