Hanging Thief - Diogmites

Hanging Thief - Diogmites
James River National Wildlife Refuge, Virginia, USA
July 14, 2007
Size: 1/2 - 1 inch
It was staring me down on the trail. It didn't move so I don't know if it jumps and I didn't see any wings for it to fly. Anybody know what it is?

Moved
Moved from Robber Flies.

Thanks for all the comments. I'd have to agree it looks like a Diogmite.

Diogmites
looks rather like the D. missouriensis i find around my neck of the woods... perhaps Herschel will add his two cents.

Is it a Diogmites?
One of the hanging robber flies?

Apparently similar photo here.

Both that one and yours are super shots. I am envious that you have stared this creature in the face and lived to tell the tale.

Keep shooting.

Robber Fly...yes
Diogmites, I think.

Pretty sure it's a fly
In fact, it looks like a robber fly (but what do I know?). I have no idea whether it's wingless by heredity or by misadventure. If the latter, that would be a tragedy, because robber flies are among the strongest and most effective flying predators around- I don't think there's anything that can match them in their size range.
