Sexton Beetle Nicrophorus orbicollis - Nicrophorus orbicollis

Sexton Beetle Nicrophorus orbicollis - Nicrophorus orbicollis
North Clarendon (mid-state), Rutland County, Vermont, USA
July 14, 2007
The identification was pretty easy given the dead vole they were trying to move and the ready availability of bugguide. This is submitted because our area fell outside the ranges listed and I thought you'd like to know.

Moved
Moved from Sexton Beetles.

Orbicolis?
Are you certain about the orbicolis ID?
I won't discard Nicrophorus sayi as a good candidate, but i don't know if it is present or not in your area...
The best feature to look for is the shape of the Metatibia, wich is "normal" for N.orbicolis and really rounded for N.sayi.
By the third pictures, i would say like you, N.orbicolis, but it's better to verify those details with the thing "in hand" (well, i won't put a Silphidae directly in my hand, those thing stinks quite a lot of cadaver, but you understant my meaning...)

For sure
This is Nicrophorus orbicollis

Not at all sure
I'm not a bug person, just happened across these and did the best I could. Have at it!

I could probably get more pictures if there are some angles or details I could get - they're still around.

OK, i'll be least technical then.
To confirm between N.orbicolis ans N.sayi, take a good shot of the hind leg (thus of the metatibia).
An idea of the beast size should also help in eliminating other possible species since the way the elytra do not cover the abdomen completly raise some doubt in my mind about either N.orbicolis and N.sayi.

Seems like it should be called hippo-head. The head and thorax really look like a hippopotamus head to me, at least for the one on the right.
